How do you make a new lawn from seed?
We put quality first and have a reputation as one of the very best lawn companies in Kent.
Every lawn is different in the required initial groundwork, and this is the important part to get right to ensure the long term quality of your new lawn.
We invest extensively in the very best specialist tools and machinery to enable us to get the ground and soil conditions perfect for grass seed establishment in pretty much any situation. Combined with our extensive knowledge and experience, top quality topsoil and grass seed blends, and sheer hard work, the end result will be a beautiful new lawn for you to admire and enjoy!
We can also apply a non-selective herbicide a couple of weeks before we sow your new lawn to tackle any present annual weeds or weed grasses.
Below is a step by step guide to a typical lawn seeding project:
1 - Spray existing vegetation
Our professional pre-treatment will kill off existing grass, weed grass, weeds and moss to avoid competition with your new grass.
2 - Ground preparation
We use a tiller or our specialist stone burier machine to decompact the ground. This will mill the ground, and special screening bars bury existing vegetation and small stones, leaving a fine tilth seedbed.
3 - Levelling and firming lawn area
Our specialist power box rake or hand rakes are used to prepare the surface. The box rake will help remove any air pockets and consolidate the soil without over-compacting, which can cause many ongoing problems in the long term. For smaller lawns we will heel in and rake the surface several times until the correct levels and firmness are attained.
4 - Pre-seed fertiliser
A professional grade pre-seed fertiliser will be applied to your lawn to promote healthy root growth and a rapid establishment of your new lawn. A balanced blend with a high phosphorus content to encourage rooting.
5 - Professional lawn seed installation
Using our custom made ride on lawn seeder for larger lawns, we plant the seeds directly into the prepared soil for amazing soil contact and germination. The cast dimple rollers firm the ground and the calibrated seed dispenser ensures accurate, even seeding. For smaller lawns we will use a calibrated drop spreader, then work the seed into the soil with a drag mat, which also smooths the surface.
6 - Establishment
Your new lawn will need watering around twice a day for the next few weeks whilst the roots establish, then as and when needed. It should be ready for it's first mow after 3-4 weeks, using a sharp blade and a high setting. You can then relax, enjoy and watch your new lawn thickening and establishing!

Looking After Your New Lawn
It is vitally important that your newly seeded lawn is watered regularly until established. This is normally at least twice daily for the first 3-4 weeks, then a couple of heavy waterings weekly as needed.
The surface MUST be kept moist at all times until the new grass root system has established.
The water needs to soak into the top 50-75mm of topsoil with each watering.
A fairly good guide in most situations is to put a clear cup on the lawn during watering. When the water level fills the cup to around 12-15mm, that area should have received enough water.
It is important to keep off the lawn as much as possible for the first couple of weeks, the watering will make the ground below the lawn quite soft and vulnerable to footprints.
Mowing can be undertaken after around 2-3 weeks. You should just take the very top of the grass off during the first mow, then gradually reduce cutting heights with each mow. The key is to not remove more than 1/3rd of the grass blade height in any one mow.
The eventual height of the grass should be 30-40mm, depending on grass species and season.

We only use grass seed from the most respected producers, including DLF and Barenbrug.
Is there a cheaper alternative to completely replacing my lawn?
Yes! Our Lawn Restarter renovation package can bring tired lawns back to life at a lower cost than totally replacing it.
